Yuantong Grand Hall (Palace of Perfect Penetration)

Yuantong Grand Hall is a seven-door, double-eaves classic Buddhist construction. It was first built in the 22nd year of the Yongle Reign in the   Ming Dynasty (1424), but was seriously damaged during the Hong-Yang rebellion. The present construction is what was rebuilt in the 10th year of the Reign of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1871) by Zhou Wenxue and his mother with the funds they had worked tirelessly raising. What  are left of the original building are the stone pillars around the hall with inscriptions by famous calligraphers then. The hall has been renovated during the years since the Reform. The board of the hall was inscribed by Tan Jiancheng. The hall is mainly used to enshrine the statue of forty-eight-arm Guanyin Bodhisattva. On the eastern and western sides of the hall are shrines of Manjusri Bodhisattva and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. The walls of the hall are inlaid with the stone carvings of five hundred arhats from the Qing Dynasty, which are marvelous pieces of Buddhist art work. Among the ritual articles, there is a precious antique bronze bell cast in the 11th year of the Jiading Reign in the Southern Song Dynasty (1218), now placed on the right of the hall.
